The Tyre convex mirror is named for the ancient city of Tyre on the coast of present day Lebanon. Tyre became famous for the purple dye made from the mucus of the sea snail Murax. Approximately 10,000 snails produced only a gram of dye! It was extremely expensive and only the highest elite of the world could afford it. The color, Tyrian purple, is also called Royal Purple.
