The Latona convex mirror is named after the Greco-Roman goddess, Latona. She’s got quite a story!
Latona was the goddess of light and her sister, Asteria, was the goddess of darkness.
Latona’s lover was the king of the gods, Zeus and she begat twins, the gods Apollo and Diana. Juno, Zeus’ wife, sought vengeance in a number of gruesome ways.
Latona appears in other notable myths, usually where she punishes mortals for their hubris against her. After some Lycian peasants prevented her and her infants from drinking from a brook, Latona transformed them all into frogs inhabiting the murky, muddy depths of the brook.
Louis XIV built a marvelous fountain at Versailles depicting this myth in 1670. The Marsy brothers were the artisans who created it.
