the Mandarin convex mirror

In Mirrors by Mark Evans

The Mandarin convex mirror was inspired by the beautiful carved “coral”beads I found at the Tucson Gem & Mineral show. Each bead is carved with traditional Chinese design motifs. To compliment the splendid red color I used gold metal leaf on the frame and pale gold colored transparent Venetian glass rods. The innermost ring of glass have a thin string of hot orange running through the rods.

The Mandarin convex mirror is about 7.75 inches in diameter. It is being shipped to my NYC venue, KRB. Call 212-288-2221 for more information.

Chinese carved lacquer tray, Early Ming dynasty, about 1368-1450

The art of carving through layers of lacquer probably began during the Chinese Tang dynasty. The lacquer was a combination of tree sap( Toxicodendron vernicifluum) and cinnabar that was applied in layers then meticulously carved. Needless to say the objects made were a luxury.

Ming dynasty Mandarins

Mandarins in Chinese culture were highly educated, scholarly bureaucrats. They were officials who immersed themselves in poetry, literature and Confucian learning as well as duties as a public servant.
