the Madonna Blue convex mirror

In Mirrors by Mark Evans

The Madonna Blue convex mirror is all about the intense beauty of lapis lazuli. Lapis lazuli is a deep blue semi-precious stone that has been used since the dawn of civilization. I was fortunate to find these spheres from an Afghani dealer in Tucson. The mirror reflects the myriad blues in lapis by using Venetian glass on the gold metal leafed frame.

The Madonna Blue convex mirror is about 10 inches in diameter. It is being shipped to my NYC venue, KRB. Call 212-288-2221 for more information.

Jewelry for Walls!

Lapis lazuli powder used in the production of ultramarine pigment.

Lapis lazuli has been used by artists and artisans since antiquity. As early as 7th millennium BC lapis was used in Mesopotamia for objects as varied as jewelry to furniture to sculpture and funerary objects( the funerary mask of Tutankhamun comes to mind). For me lapis’ true glory came when the mineral was ground into powder for the creation of ultramarine pigment. The leading painters of the Renaissance and Baroque period ( Titian, Perugino, Vermeer and, specially Fra Angelico) used this color. But the lapis used in the creation of this precious blue was so expensive that it was only used for the most important figures such as the Virgin Mary.
