The Darius convex mirror is named for Darius the Great( 550 – 486 BCE), king/emperor of the ancient, vast Persian empire. He was a reformer and a builder( Persepolis) but he could not avoid the cultural and administrative rot that was destabilizing his empire.

The mighty Persian Empire was challenged by the Greek/Macedonian ambitious Alexander the Great. After several battles the two forces finally met near the town of Guagamela in 331 BCE. The Persian army had 250,000 soldiers to the Macedonian’s 50,000. Due to Alexander’s strategic brilliance the Persians were decisively defeated and Darius fled from the scene. He was killed by his own men who stupidly offered his severed head to a disgusted Alexander.
