The Antonia is named in part for the young Marie Antoinette (2 November 1755 – 16 October 1793) She was the daughter of Empress Maria Theresa and Holy Roman Emperor Francis I. From a relatively happy childhood she went on to become the Queen of France and proceeded to have a dazzling descent that ended with the guillotine.

Antonia is also one of the heroines in Offenbach’s opera The Tales of Hoffmann, 1880. She is featured in the opera’s second act. Hoffmann is in love with her but she is being hidden from the world by her protective father. She has a mysterious illness that if she sings she will die. This being opera, Hoffmann finds her and she is induced to recklessly sing by Hoffmann’s weird nemesis, Dr Miracle. She dies singing her heart out. Hoffmann is brokenhearted.
