The Amethystos convex mirror was inspired by the stunning Brazilian amethyst points. These points are around five inches in length and are unusual in that they are very clear and the purple meanders like smoke through the glassy transparency.
The frame is gilded with gold metal leaf and the steep, curved inner lining is silver and covered with a mosaic of clear Venetian glass rods.

In Greek mythology the god of wine, viticulture and drunkenness Bacchus fell in love with a beautiful nymph named Amethystos, but she spurned his affections. As many of the male gods in mythology he then chased her down, and she ran, praying to the gods to protect her virginity. The goddess of chastity Diana heard Amethystos’ pleas. She pitied the girl and transformed her into the pure, transparent mineral quartz. Bacchus relented, and seeing the stone, regretted his behaviour. He poured some wine on the quartz, which stained it purple for all time.
Oddly, the ancients believed that amethysts could prevent intoxication or even cure a hangover!
Amethyst is in the quartz family of minerals, and is considered to be the most precious of the quartz crystals. Its violet-purple color has long been associated with high status and royalty. It has been a symbol of power and sobriety going back to ancient times. Amethysts were often worn to protect against intoxication (from the Greek word “amethystos” = not drunken), and thus many amethyst wine goblets were created in antiquity.
