Edward as the Prince of Wales painted about 1546 by William Scrots.

Edward VI was the only surviving legitimate son of Henry VIII and his third wife, Jane Seymour. He lived till he was 15 and died a grotesque and painful death due to tuberculosis. He was a committed if not a fanatic Protestant and tried to continue that religion as the English state religion after his death. He failed due to the unease within England and the machinations of his half sister Mary. Mary was a devout, if not fanatic Catholic and she plunged England into a period of suppression that lead to many Protestants being burned at the stake. She is know known as “Bloody Mary”. She was succeeded by her half sister, Elizabeth who went on to be one of the most successful monarchs in British history. She was a devout Protestant.
