the Apollonia convex mirror

In Mirrors by Mark Evans

The Apollonia convex mirror features rays made up of faceted lemony citrine crystals. The silver gilt frame has a mosaic made of two layers of Venetian glass rods. One gold and the other a pale lime green.

The Apollonia convex mirror is about 14 inches in diameter. It hangs in my studio pending being shipped to one of my showrooms.

Saint Apollonia by Francisco Zurbaran about 1636

Of course, the Apollonia convex mirror has to have a reference! Saint Apollonia was one of a group of Christian virgins who defied the Roman emperor Decius. She was tortured by the Roman soldiers by having all of her teeth ripped out and shattered. Needless to say, she is the patron saint of dentistry! She is usually depicted grasping a pair of pliers holding one of her teeth…. Too gross?

There’s another, more contemporary reference and that is the musician Apollonia Kotero who was Prince’s girlfriend in the amazing film Purple Rain.
