Aphrodite and Eros Mourning Adonis, Cornelius Holstyn, 1655

The Adonis convex mirror is named for the mortal Adonis who was the lover of the goddess Aphrodite in Greek mythology. Adonis is known for his physical beauty and stood as an ideal for Greek artists in the classical period. He was killed when he was gored by wild boars. Such are the risks when one is a hunter! Aphrodite was so bereft that when her tears mingled with Adonis’ blood anemone flowers miraculously grew out of the earth.

Dying Adonis by Hendrik Goltzius, 1609. Note the anemones.
