the Pamina mirror

In Mirrors by Mark Evans

The Pamina mirror is not really a mirror. There is a mirror involved but its backing a large oval cabochon in the middle. A “mirror with no reflection”. I’ve used silver leaf to backlight the layers of Venetian clear glass rods. Some thinner ones in a pale smoke color give depth and shadow to the clear glass.

The Pamina mirror is about 12 inches by 7 inches. It is in my studio pending shipment to one of my showrooms.

Pamina is one of the lead characters in Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute( Die Zauberflote) written in 1791. The allegorical plot was influenced by Mozart’s interest in Freemasonry and concerns the initiation of Prince Tamino. Enlisted by the Queen of the Night to rescue her daughter Pamina from the high priest Sarastro, Tamino comes to admire the high ideals of the latter and he and Pamina both join Sarastro’s community, while the Queen and her allies are vanquished.
