The Oculus convex mirror started as a wood frame that I gilded with gold metal leaf. The inner ring of the frame has transparent gold/bronze Venetian glass rods and tiger eye spheres. Surrounding the frame are large, translucent, faceted Botswana agate spheres topped with tiger eye.
The Oculus mirror measures about nine inches in diameter. It is part of a commission from my Atlanta showroom. Ainsworth-Noah.
Jewelry for Walls!
An Oculus in archtecture is a round opening at the top of a dome or wall. Its purpose is to provide a source of light and ventilation. It was used in Roman and neo-classical architecture.
Perhaps the most famous oculus is in the Pantheon in Rome. The Pantheon was finished by the emperor Hadrian in 125 AD. The oculus is a remarkable 29 feet in diameter.
