the Mendl convex mirror

In Mirrors by Mark Evans

The Mendl convex mirror is made of a gold metal leafed frame, clear Venetian glass rods and the tips of the star are rock crystal quartz points.

The Mendl convex mirror is a little more than 13 inches in diameter. It resides in my studio pending being shipped to one of my showrooms/venues.

Elsie de Wolfe, Lady Mendl, wearing Schiaparelli’s Apollo of Versailles cape in 1938

The Mendl convex mirror is named for Elsie de Wolfe, Lady Mendl ( 1859-1950). She was the first professional interior decorator and was famous, among other things, for throwing out dark, Victorian clutter for lighter, simpler, more elegant and livable interiors. Her style included 18th century French furniture, fresh colors, lacquer accessories, mirrors and indoor lattice work.

She was also a superb party giver, lesbian, semi-vegetarian, patriot, actress, dog lover, yoga practitioner and peerless self promoter.
