the Giulia convex mirror

In Mirrors by Mark Evans

The Giulia convex mirror is composed of golden Venetian glass rods floating over a wedge of gilded clear resin. The tips of the rays are embellished with rough amber African beads that I have varnished to make them gem-like. They are topped with Venetian glass, gilded beads. The inner ring around the mirror is studded with sardonix spheres.

The Giulia convex mirror is about 10.25 inches in diameter. It hangs in my studio pending being shipped to one of my showrooms.

Stables in the Ruins of Villa Giulia by Hubert Robert circa 1762

he Villa Giulia is a villa in Rome, Italy. It was built by Pope Julius III in 1551–1553 on what was then the edge of the city. Today it is publicly owned, and houses the Museum of Etruscan Art and Civilization. But what inspired the Giulia convex mirror were the paintings by Hubert Robert who’s fantastical paintings of a derelict Villa Giulia are seeped in a golden light.
