The Danilo convex mirror frame is made of composite material. I re-finished and gilded it gold leaf. Hundreds of Venetian glass rods in clear crystal, taupe and light grey layer the mirror frame. At each point of the rays I have placed a marble sized sphere of pyrite in a bronze color.
This mirror is about 7.5 inches in diameter. It is in my studio until being shipped to the Ainsworth-Noah showroom in Atlanta. Call 404-240-2137 for more information.
The Merry Widow is an operetta by the Austro-Hungarian composer Franz Lehár. The librettists, Viktor Léon and Leo Stein, based the story – concerning a rich widow, and her countrymen’s attempt to keep her money in the principality by finding her the right husband – on an 1861 comedy play, L’attaché d’ambassade (The Embassy Attaché) by Henri Meilhac. The man designated to seduce the rich widow is the devastating and charming Count Danilo Danilovitsch. Naturally Danilo succeeds in a silly roundabout way but goes through the phases o infatuation, desire, rejection, sulking, courage, love and redemption. The plot in a nutshell goes like this:
Prince Danilo falls in love with dancer Sally O’Hara. His uncle, King Nikita I of Monteblanco, forbids the marriage because she is a commoner. Thinking she has been jilted by her prince, Sally marries the old and lecherous Baron Sadoja, whose wealth has kept the kingdom afloat. When he dies suddenly, Sally must be wooed all over again by Danilo.
Three Danilos of the silver screen; John Gilber(1925), Maurice Chevalier( 1934) and Fernando Lamas(1953).
The operetta has enjoyed extraordinary international success since its 1905 premiere in Vienna and continues to be frequently revived and recorded. Film and other adaptations have also been made. Well-known music from the score includes the “Vilja”, “Da geh’ ich zu Maxim” (“You’ll Find Me at Maxim’s”), and the “Merry Widow Waltz”.
Mae Murrey and John Gilbert star in Erich von Stroheim’ 1925 adaption.
Something naughty is going on in the Balkan principality of Pontevedro!
One of the posters for Von Stroheim’s Merry Widow. Dancing, romance and champagne.
Of course, when I thought of the name Danilo for this mirror I immediately remembered my old friend, Danilo. Probably the most brilliant makeup artist in the country.

The richness of the interior of Basilica San Vitale in Ravenna is truly mind boggling. All the mosaics are executed in the Hellenistic-Roman tradition: lively and imaginative, with rich colors and a certain perspective, and with a vivid depiction of the landscape, plants and birds. And the gold!
