The Calypso convex mirror is a deep oval. I silver metal gilded it first. Then I layered on clear and pale gray/aqua transparent Venetian glass rods. I waited till I could go back to the Tucson Gem & Mineral Show and found a dealer who sold handmade, recycled glass beads. The beads were enormous! After I got back to my studio I sealed them with a layer of clear resin which brought out a breathtaking clarity making them jewel-like. After capping them with clear cabochons they were ready to stud the frame.
I also created my own oval convex mirror. I made an effort for the mirror to have the rippled look of antique mirrors.
Calypso measures 15 inches by 13 inches. It resides in my studio pending being shipped to one of my showrooms.

The Calypso convex mirror is named for the mythical sea nymph who is featured in Homer’s The Odyssey.
One of Oceanides sea nymphs, Calypso was the daughter of the Titan god Atlas and her mother was Tethys. Her name is related to the Greek word καλύπτω, which means “to conceal” and she symbolized the forces that divert men from their goals. The Greek myth of Calypso and Odysseus (Ulysses) is full of intrigue and moments of seduction.
