the Belinda convex mirror

In Mirrors by Arif

The Belinda convex mirror is unusual for me. For one thing, its an oval. But, more significantly, I mirrored the piece of oval convex glass. No spray paint. A real chemical process! Not perfect, but I really don’t want it to be.

The frame is gold leafed and the spikes creating a corona are rock crystal quartz points that are loaded with inclusions. These “flaws” create a sparkle that is extraordinary.

The inner ring of the oval are studded with rock crystal spheres that are hand made in India.

The Belinda mirror is about 20 inches by 17 inches. It is currently in my studio prior to being shipped to one of my showrooms.

Aubrey Beardsley’s illustration for Alexander Pope’s poem The Rape

The meaning of the name Belinda is not known for certain. The first element could be related to Italian bella “beautiful”. Alternatively it may be derived from the Old High German name Betlinde, which possibly meant “bright serpent” or “bright linden tree”. This name first arose in the 17th century, and was subsequently used by Alexander Pope in his poem The Rape of the Lock (1712).
