the Orpheus Convex Mirror

In All, Mirrors by Arif

The Opheus  convex mirror frame is made of wood that I re-finished and gilded it silver and gold metal leaf. The sides of the frame are studded with oval quartz crystals in two sizes.  The inner, silver, are layered with clear spheres and clear Venetian glass.  The contrast of the gold, silver and clear make this one of my favorite mirrors.  Like the music of the mythical Orpheus this mirror will charm animals, birds, trees and even rocks.

This mirror is about 11 inches in diameter.  It is in my studio until being shipped to one of my showrooms.

Orpheus is a legendary musician, poet, and prophet in ancient Greek religion and myth. Some ancient Greek sources note Orpheus’ Thracian origins. The major stories about him are centered on his ability to charm all living things and even stones with his music, his failed attempt to retrieve his wife, Euridice, from the underworld of the dead, and his death at the hands of those who could not hear his divine music( the Bacchantes of Dionysius literaly tore poor Orheus apart!). As an archetype of the inspired singer, Orpheus is one of the most significant figures in the themes of classical mythology in Western culture, portrayed or alluded  to in countless forms of art and popular culture including poetry, film, opera, music, and painting.

For the Greeks, Orpheus was a founder and prophet of the so-called Orphic mysteries.  He was credited with the composition of the Orphic Hymns and the Orphic Argonautica( Jason and the Argonauts). Shrines containing purported relics of Orpheus( like his head, for god’s sake) were regarded as oracles.

The ancient symbol of the serpent coiled around an egg was originally attributed to the mythical founder of the Orphic mysteries, Orpheus. It was a religion centered on the teachings of the origins of life, procreation, immortality, mortality, creativity, and wisdom.  For more on the Orphic Egg go to https://gnosticwarrior.com/serpent-and-egg.html

The richness of the interior of Basilica San Vitale in Ravenna is truly mind boggling. All the mosaics are executed in the Hellenistic-Roman tradition: lively and imaginative, with rich colors and a certain perspective, and with a vivid depiction of the landscape, plants and birds.  And the gold!
