the Clairon Convex Mirror • The Art of Mark Evans

The Clairon convex mirror frame is made of wood that has been re-finished and gilded in silver leaf. Hundreds of Venetian glass rods in tones of gold, straw, amber and pewter cover both levels of the mirror frame.

This mirror is about 16 inches in diameter. It is in my studio until being shipped to one of my showrooms.

Clair Josephe Hippolyte Leris( 1723-1803, known as La Clairon was one of the most famous and accomplished actors of 18th century France. She introduced a more natural style of acting which was revolutionary. La Clairon led a wild, extravagant and licentious life with many lovers and bankruptcies. She live to the exceptionally old age of 80.

The richness of the interior of Basilica San Vitale in Ravenna is truly mind boggling. All the mosaics are executed in the Hellenistic-Roman tradition: lively and imaginative, with rich colors and a certain perspective, and with a vivid depiction of the landscape, plants and birds. And the gold!
